In Your Orbit

By Cooper Sudderth

Fashion is perceived in different ways by many individuals. Some people could care less about their fashion sense and what they wear on a daily basis. Others, however, make it the core focus of their entire persona.

The fluidity and diversity of fashion drive the interest of so many people–one’s style is a unique idiosyncrasy that pertains only to one’s personal passions and cognitive design. Fashion, in this sense, is a balance of the inner and outer self, intertwining within one’s ego.

However, due to the state of the world we live in, fashion can fall out of alignment with the core being. Stress from work, school, social media, and many other things in one’s life can cause an imbalance of the personal identity and its outward exhibition. The same phenomenon happens with artists all the time: art block. This peculiar event occurs when one’s ideas and creative expression are trapped inside the mind and are impeded from flowing through the body. For artists, it may be as simple as not knowing what to draw and/or not having the mental vigor to actually draw; however, it can be much graver for fashionistas. When the creative expression is suppressed, questions may arise that affect one’s everyday life: “Blue or red? Should I dress up for this event? I can’t tell whether I like how this looks on me or not.”

Too much doubt and uncertainty can eventually lead to a nihilistic lifestyle devoid of expression or care towards the evocative interest. How, then, do we prevent this so-called “fashion block”? Self-care. Human beings can only bear so much outward pressure before they cave in, so one should always make time for themselves when overwhelmed. Take a bath; paint something; listen to music; cook a delicious meal; do anything that provokes that creative expression again.

We are all well aware of how shitty the world and life, in general, can be, so withstand heedlessly in the ugly face of contemporary problems. Soon enough, with enough time, effort, and maybe a bit of luck, this misalignment in one’s equilibrium can once again be corrected. Remember that your style revolves around YOU! When you focus on yourself, your style, and the way you carry yourself, that’s when you’re in your orbit. Inspiration is always welcome, but do not let anyone define who you are nor what you should do. Express yourself vividly; be confident in your maneuvers. Everything will fall into place, and everything will be in your orbit!
