WONDERLAND

By Rachel Schleider

The wonderland of fashion— having fallen down the rabbit hole, what would be your muse? Checkered patterns and puffed-up pinafores or white roses painted red and pocket watches. Possibilities become limitless in a world built on imagination.

The dreamy tale of Alice in Wonderland takes on a whole new stance of possibilities in a literal and symbolic sense. Alice finds herself in a life full of stuck-up adults who’ve made her believe that every action needs to be justified. In her dream world, “Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?” And as the story goes, Alice falls into Wonderland, where societal pressures and rules are not dictating life. Instead, pushing boundaries and breaking the rules is celebrated, and fashion proves to make for the best form of individuality within each character.

Fashion’s beauty lies in its ability to become anything you can conjure up from your imagination, no matter how mad. Individuals construct their styles from a feeling, reflecting culture, sense of community, and interpretation of clothing. You don’t need expensive pieces and a full closet to have good style— all you need is a good eye, an idea and an identity.

Clothing can serve whatever purpose you want; a form of expression, a statement, or just a basic form of coverage. The best part? It doesn’t have to make sense to anyone but you.

In an evolved world, no one would be able to confine what you do, say, or wear. You could live freely; celebrate your un-birthday, play live flamingo croquet, or shrink yourself with the bite of a biscuit, just as Ms. Alice herself would do.

Fashion is something worth getting lost in. Take the trip down the rabbit hole and lose yourself in colors and textures; splurge on statement pieces or get creative with a pair of scissors and a sewing machine. Jumble inner nonsense with backward ideals and upside-down trends– you don't have to make sense of it, just make it yours.
